Behind the Story: HowAlways a WolfCame to Life

Written, produced, and filmed by Nathan Chang, who also appears on camera.

Tri-Valley Student Film Festival Honoree

1. Finding the Story

Every project starts with one question:

What feeling do I want people to leave with?

Before picking up the camera, I think about the emotion, the audience, and the moments that will best tell the story. In “Always a Wolf,” I wanted to document the bittersweet feeling of having to say goodbye to high school.

2. Planning

Every scene is mapped and planned around pacing, emotion, and visual continuity.

3. Capturing Moments

Once filming begins, I'm looking for genuine moments rather than staged ones. I usually shoot far more than I need so I have flexibility in the edit.

4. Editing

Editing is where the story comes together. I shape pacing, music, narration, and color to create the emotional rhythm of each project.

5. Final Story

Delivering the finished story.

ABOUT ME

Hi, I’m Nathan

I’m a UCLA student studying World Arts & Culture with a focus on digital media and pursuing double minors in Film & TV and Digital Humanities.

I’m passionate about telling stories that feel genuine — whether that’s documenting student life at Duke University or UCLA, creating content for social media, filming a short documentary, or photographing a live event.

What I enjoy most is finding the moments that people remember but rarely notice in real time.

When I’m not behind the camera, I’m usually editing, exploring new creative ideas, or looking for better ways to connect storytelling with digital media.
